Meet The New Owner of Kids Fashion Boutique – Cape Kids
If you’ve stopped into locally owned boutique, Cape Kids, recently you may have noticed that the shop has a fresh new look. Owner, Amanda MacNeil, took over the shop in May of this year. Amanda hails from the west coast, Los Angeles specifically, and she’s aiming to merge her LA style with her love for Cape Cod in the quaint boutique. She worked in fashion PR for years before switching gears to work on the retail side of things. Her fashion background is evident in her carefully curated selection of unique items for little ones. From super soft tees made from vintage band shirts, to fashionable necklaces for Mom that double as teething toys for baby, Amanda has a knack for melding function with fashion. We recently chatted with her to learn more about what brought her to the east coast, what inspires her, and more. Check it out…
Q: What brought you to Cape Cod?
A: I have been summering on the Cape (Pocasset) since I was about 15 yrs old. My parents bought an old sea captains house and dreamed of retiring there at one point together. My dad was fortunate enough to carry on that dream for the both of them a few years ago. I have a small family and when my dad moved to the Cape after he retired, I missed having him on the same coast so I decided to move to Cape Cod to be closer to him.
Q: Do you carry any items for Moms?
A: As of now we carry a few lines that cater to helping mothers. Mama & Little offers modern, fashionable silicone teething jewelry for any mama on the go – super cute necklaces and bracelets that you’d swear are just everyday accessories! We also carry a wide assortment of swaddles by ADEN + ANAIS and Swaddle Designs, muslin swaddles not only help with infant care but also assist moms on the go with breast feeding coverage.
Q: Can you tell us about some of your unique lines for kids?
A: My mission at Cape Kids is to offer the best of both coasts. Being that I am born and raised in Malibu, CA the laid-back, casual fashion of L.A. really resonates with me. However, because all of my family members are native Bostonians and I grew up visiting my entire life, I truly appreciate the East Coast traditional fashions.
With that being said, we offer a variety of unique lines that cater to most anyone at price points that won’t break the bank. From hand-knitted sweaters by Sweeters, casual wear and PJ’s by Hatley, carefully crafted tops by CHASER Brand that feel like an old worn in rock ’n roll shirt to luxurious newborn gifts by Bearington Baby that feel like heaven!
Q: Can you tell us about a few of your favorite products currently available in your shop?
A: I’m definitely obsessed with this gender-neutral pullover by CHASER Brand, the front says ‘I [heart] pizza’ and it feels heavenly, plus…who doesn’t love pizza?? We also carry these two adorable onesies that are handmade in Los Angeles, the girls is pink and reads ‘I’m Not Allowed To Date…EVER’ while the boys version is grey and reads ‘Hello Ladies’. They’re pretty stinking cute and funny.
Q: What is your favorite social media platform?
A: Personally, Instagram. Hands down. I’m obsessed 24/7. Although as a business owner, I utilize both Instagram and Facebook to keep customers on both platforms in the loop on the latest CapeKids info.
Q: What are you currently listening to in the store?
A: I get the most compliments on my music from guests! I always have the ‘Hipster Cocktail Party’ Pandora station on. It’s a great mixture of classic hits such as Frank Sinatra and Fleetwood Mac to new-age indie hits such as Amy Winehouse and Lord Hurron. It tends to make everyone happy and what more could you ask for?!
Q: Who is your favorite Mommy blogger?
A: I’m obsessed with Laura Wiertzema of @AscotFriday, she and her two sons represents Southern California style perfectly.
Q: What inspires you?
A: A feel the most inspired when I’m back in Los Angeles. There’s just no escaping the creativity out there – from trendy little bistro’s, houses painted with abstract art on the exterior, carefully curated little boutiques, creative agencies, fashion bloggers on the streets, etc. My goal is to bring some of that inspiration to my boutique on Cape Cod.
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: When I’m not at the store rearranging, merchandising and doing social media, I love driving around the Cape and getting lost, getting to know my new home, stopping in anywhere to grab a bite and a glass of wine. I also love yoga and shopping 🙂
