Doggie Adoption & Fundraiser Event at The Black Dog – This Saturday!

The Black DogFinding homes for rescue dogs is a mission close The Black Dog’s hearts (their namesake Black Dog was a rescue pup herself!) which is why every year they partner with local non-profits to spend a day introducing shelter dogs to their forever homes. Join them for their next Doggie Adoption event on Saturday, March 24th, between 12-4pm.

The Black Dog is partnering with Survivor Tails Animal Rescue (STAR) on this year’s event. STAR is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization that exists to rescue, re-home, and rehabilitate homeless, unwanted, abused, and neglected dogs and cats and place them in loving and responsible forever homes. Survivor Tails will have an info table where volunteers will gladly answer any questions and provide information about adopting, fostering and volunteering. They will even have guest appearances from some adoptable pups!

If you are not quite ready to commit to adoption but would still like to support this wonderful resource for animals, you can help by simply picking up your new Black Dog gear on Saturday (perfect time to grab that sweatshirt you’ve been eyeing). Throughout the day, 20% of the store’s sales will be donated to STAR.

Grab a Pint in the Commons for St Patrick’s Day!

St Patrick’s Day is here and if you can’t make it to Boston for the big parade, Mashpee Commons is the place to be! With seven restaurants and pubs, we have plenty of places to pour your perfect pint and grab a bite on St Patrick’s Day. Settle in for they day at one place, or hop from restaurant to restaurant trying different food and drink. Here are some of our recommendations:

Grab a beer and a pretzel burger at The Lanes Bowl & Bistro. With 15 beers on tap – and most of them local, and, of course Guinness, The Lanes is a lively, fun environment in which to spend an afternoon with family and friends. Grab one of their big burgers for yourself, or split one of their many ‘appy’tizers like buffalo chicken dip, an ahi tuna & avocado stack or pretzel sticks with your crew. If you need to recover the next morning, stop back in for their Bloody Good Brunch! Make sure to ask your server or bartender for their latest beer and drink specials.

What kind of St Patrick’s Day would it be without a stop in at Bobby Byrne’s Restaurant & Pub? An incomplete one! Bobby Byrne’s will be running special Irish meals all day on Saturday, including Corned Beef & Cabbage, Shepherd’s Pie and Guinness Battered Fish & Chips. Of course, the Guinness and other Irish brews will be flowing at the bar all day through breakfast, lunch dinner and late night.

Estia is a non-traditional option for your St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Be sure to get to our neighborhood Greek restaurant early, because they fill up quick and stay busy! Their strong craft beer selection features beers from Jack’s Abby, Otter Creek, Wormtown (their ‘Be Hoppy’ is excellent), Mayflower Brewing and more. Chow down on their coal fired pizzas, including the ‘Alessandra’ with crispy calamari and banana peppers, and the ‘Cretan’ with an eggplant spread base, goat cheese and tomatoes.

If you’re looking for a low-key lunch during the St Patrick’s Day festivities, the newly renovated Trevi Café & Wine Bar is a great option. Grab a cheese board (3 for $17 or 5 for $25) and a bottle of wine, or nibble on their small plates including shortrib hash, avocado salad and Chatham Mussels. For those with a bigger appetite, Trevi features sandwiches, pastas and entree sized salads on their lunch menu. In addition to their extensive wine list, Trevi offers a full bar, specialty cocktails, and fabulous beer list.

Ducking out of the Cold this Winter? Travel Prepared with Kensington’s

KensingtonsDreaming about a weekend getaway to a warmer climate? If you have travel plans in your near future, be sure to stop by Kensington’s here in Mashpee Commons. This locally owned travel boutique has everything you need to prepare for your trip. Whether it’s new luggage, RFID blocking wallets, international smartphone charging kits or a new watch, they have high-quality, stylish gear available in-store, some of which can be personalized. Kensington’s has also prepared a helpful ‘Traveler Tips & Checklist’ that you can and should consult before every trip. Check out some of the unique highlights that will help you to make the travel part of your trip a breeze:

Screenshot your boarding passes and email yourself confirmed travel itineraries and a scanned copy of your passport. That way, if you lose a paper boarding pass or can’t access wi-fi to get your paperless ticket, you’re covered and can still get where you’re going. Kensington’s offers stylish travel bags and wallets from Vera Bradley, Osgood Marley and others that can help you keep important documents close by and protected.

Pack in an orderly, organized manner to avoid checking extra bags or paying extra fees. The Eagle Creek Pack-It System is an innovative solution to help you keep your packing neat and compact to fit in as few bags as possible. Their Pack-It Cube sets allow you to compartmentalize your luggage in a space-efficient manner without wrinkling your clothes or having your dirty laundry stink up your duffel bag after a long trip. You will be amazed how much more you can fit in your luggage with Eagle Creek’s products, making packing less of an ordeal.

Download an airline’s app to track your luggage. This little-known feature of many airline mobile applications can be a huge help should your luggage be misplaced by the airline. Taking photos of your luggage and utilizing personalized, unique luggage tags can also help make your luggage easier to identify on the baggage carousel, or to help airline employees find a piece that has been lost. Kensington’s ‘Make it Personal Now’ laser engraving service is a stylish and functional accent to any leather luggage tag.

You can also take a complimentary photo with Santa in the store on December 22nd from 1-4pm. To learn more about Lindsay and her boutique, read our Q & A with her below:

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what drove you to open a children’s boutique?
I graduated from The University Of Rhode Island with a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and had worked in the field for a number of years.  I was then exposed to the world of children’s products when working in a similar store elsewhere.

Since moving to Massachusetts I have continued working with children, but always hoped to get back into children’s retail.  I never thought that at 29 I’d be opening my own boutique, but now I have a beautiful 21 month old daughter who is the catalyst for Fox + Kit. My daughter Thea is the sweetest, most amazing person I’ve ever known and I’m so lucky to be her mom. Much of what we have at Fox + Kit we have used, and loved, at home.

How did you choose Mashpee as your location?
I began visiting the Cape when I was in high school, spending weekends and holidays at my step-father’s vacation house. When I moved to Southeastern Massachusetts I spent much of my time on Cape while nannying and later working at a local preschool. When I decided to open Fox + Kit I knew that Cape Cod was the perfect place.  Mashpee in particular offered a small community feel that I love.

How long will you be open as a pop-up and when will you be re-opening your permanent location?
Fox + Kit will be open as a pop-up until Christmas, and will re-open permanently mid to late February.

Do you have any upcoming events or promotions?
Fox + Kit will have a Grand Opening Celebration later this winter (date TBD) and will also be hosting music classes and regular weekend story times.  Our play space is always available for young children to enjoy while their adults look around.

Can you tell us about a few of your favorite products currently available in your shop?
I have so many favorites!

I’d have to say the Hape Ice Cream Emporium and the Clek Foonf.  And Little Unicorn swaddles! The Ice Cream Emporium is a unique dramatic play option that even my young daughter enjoys playing with here.

The Clek Foonf is a revolutionary, and recyclable, car seat that offers unparalleled safety.  I have one for my daughter and it’s absolutely the best purchase I have made for her.

Little Unicorn swaddles are amazing!!! They’re ridiculously soft, breathable, versatile, and they make a narwhal pattern (I love narwhals).

Can you tell us about some of your specialty lines/products?
In general I’ve tried to source many products that are either made in the USA, organic, recycled, made in Canada/Europe, or socially/environmentally conscious. I like to be able to stand behind the brands I’ve chosen.

Do you carry any locally sourced or handmade products?
I will! I’ve been talking with some local brands and plan to bring them in for the re-opening.

Where do you like to hang out at the Commons when you are not working?
I’ve spent a lot of time at both Starbucks and Cape Cod Coffee. I love being able to sit and enjoy a hot cup of tea or an iced latte. Thea and I also really enjoy painting at Color Me Mine, and many of our Christmas gifts this year were hand painted by Thea!

Do you offer gift-wrapping?
Yes! I love wrapping presents so I knew I wanted to offer complimentary gift wrapping. I have gift boxes, tissue and bags, and seasonally appropriate wrapping paper available.
